About Portuguese Island

Portuguese Island (Ilha dos Portugueses) is a small, uninhabited island in Maputo Bay and a protected marine reserve. Guests go ashore by tender to spend the day on soft white sand, wading in warm, clear water that stays shallow far out from the beach.

Things to do

Swim and float in calm, crystal-clear shallows
Snorkel among reef fish in the marine reserve
Walk the long sandbanks that appear at low tide
Relax on a quiet beach with no buildings in sight

Good to know

• Ashore by tender boat — bring reef-safe sunscreen, a hat and water
• There is very little shade or facilities on the island
• A valid passport is required for Mozambique
